Rent increases in Dubai: what tenants should know
The rental index, the 90-day notice rule and how to dispute an increase.
Read the guide →Do I have to go to MOHRE before court?+
For most private-sector labour disputes, yes: a complaint is filed with MOHRE, which attempts settlement before referral to the labour court.
Which personal-status law applies now?+
Federal Decree-Law No. 41 of 2024, in force since 15 April 2025, for Muslims; non-Muslims may opt for civil personal-status rules.
My employer has not paid my salary. What can I do?+
Generally you can file a complaint with MOHRE (or your free-zone authority). MOHRE first tries an amicable settlement; if that fails the matter can be referred to the Labour Court. Keep your contract, payslips and messages. A lawyer can calculate exactly what you are owed.
How is end-of-service gratuity calculated?+
Under the current Labour Law, gratuity is generally based on basic salary: 21 days per year for the first five years and 30 days per year after that, capped at two years of wages. Free zones and special contracts may differ.
Can my landlord increase the rent at any time?+
In Dubai, rent increases are generally limited by the RERA rental index and require at least 90 days notice before renewal. Other emirates have their own rules. Disputes go to the Rental Dispute Centre or the local rent committee.
